MATRIX 239 Live, UAM, UC Berkeley, 2011

MATRIX is an ongoing contemporary art series at the University Art Museum in Berkeley, CA.  I chose to perform in a space of the building that, after some research in the archive, was the exact site of a James Lee Byars piece for Matrix 5 in 1978. Untitled Object (“Runcible”) or the Performable Square, was a series of strips of paper, laid out into a square form with dimensions varying with the site. I uncovered a contact shee to photographs during the process of laying out the very first row of paper. I became interested two consecutive images, mere moments apart,  and used it as the structure of my work. images from  Orchesis, the dance club of sorts that was assiciated with the school years ago.  Blending these two very different times and reasons for movement (physical education and utilitarian task), I created a 12-minute dance piece utilizing the positions in the photos of bodies in the actual space as the structure for the piece.
